Common Types of Fireproofing Material for Structural Steels

1. Intumescent (Contact Supplier)

  • Is a thin layer coating usually applied by spraying several layers, trowel apply or brush application. Thickness may vary up to 7mm thick.
  • When fire occurs, the coatings generally expand into char giving a protection to the structural steels.
  • Fire rating: Up to 2 Hours 
  • Advantages:
    • Thinner layer
    • lighter in weight
    • better texture
    • color can be any
  • Disadvantage:
    • Cost can be higher than vermiculite and fire wrap.

2. Vermiculite (Contact Supplier)

  • Is a type of fireproofing coating that looks like cementitious type that is applied using spray or trowel.
  • Thickness can be 25mm or more
  • Fire rating: Up to 4 hours
  • Advantages
    • Price can be cheaper than intumescent
  • Disadvantages
    • Heavy and thick
    • Craggy surface
    • Cannot be painted to color

3. Fire Wrap (Contact Supplier)

  • Is a type of fireproofing that is wrapped on the surface of the structural steels instead of spray or trowel application
  • Fire Rating: Up to 2 hours
  • Advantages
    • Price can be cheaper
    • Easier to install
    • Shorter application/installation time
    • Lighter than vermiculite
  • Disadvantages
    • Thick and bulky
    •  finishing is less attractive compared to intumescent
